Tomie Ohtake (Kyoto, Japan 1913 - São Paulo SP, 2015)

Tomie Ohtake was a painter, printmaker, and sculptor, born in Japan and residing in Brazil since 1936. Upon settling in São Paulo, she began engaging with art in 1952, studying painting under the artist Keisuke Sugano. The following year, she joined the Seibi Group, which included other notable artists such as Manabu Mabe, Tikashi Fukushima, Flavio Shiró, and Tadashi Kaminagai. This group played a significant role in the development of abstract art in Brazil, and after a brief period exploring figurative art, Ohtake embraced abstraction, a movement that defined her work throughout her career.

In the 1970s, Ohtake began experimenting with new techniques, such as screen printing, lithography, and metal engraving, further diversifying her artistic forms. Her works started incorporating organic shapes and hints of landscapes, and by the 1980s, she adopted a more intense and contrasting color palette, infusing her creations with unique energy. Beyond painting and printmaking, Tomie Ohtake also devoted herself to sculpture, creating numerous works for public spaces, solidifying her presence in the Brazilian art scene.

The recognition of her work was reflected in numerous awards, including the National Prize for Visual Arts from the Ministry of Culture (Minc) in 1995, in Brasília. In 2000, the Tomie Ohtake Institute was founded in São Paulo, an institution dedicated to promoting art and culture. Tomie Ohtake passed away on February 12, 2015, at the age of 101, leaving an undeniable legacy in Brazilian and international art, and is considered one of the most important figures in contemporary Brazilian art.

The Force of Fate

She came to Brazil at the age of 23, initially just to visit a brother. She planned to stay a year or two at most, and then return to Japan, her homeland, the only place she knew and where she intended to live her entire life. During her stay, the situation across the ocean became uncertain, with dark clouds overshadowing the fragile peace, bound by secret treaties between powers that would become delayed-action bombs, ready to explode at any moment. Her brother did all he could to prevent her return, hoping the skies over Europe and Asia would clear. But instead, the fury of war erupted with full force: first, a pact between Germany and Italy, and then—the feared alliance of Japan with these two countries, forming the Berlin-Rome-Tokyo Axis. Thus, Tomie Ohtake, that delicate Japanese girl, barely more than a teenager, was forced to prolong her stay in Brazil. After the war, Tomie married a Brazilian agronomist and, from then on, adopted Brazil as her second homeland, willingly falling into the trap that fate had set for her. If predestination exists, Tomie, more than anyone, felt it within herself, guided throughout life by an external force that opened doors before her and charted her path.

The Encounter with Painting

Tomie Ohtake was born in 1913 in Kyoto, Japan. From childhood, as was customary in her homeland, she was exposed to the art of calligraphy, essential for clear expression through characters and ideograms. From calligraphy, moving to drawing was a natural step. Without any restrictions but also without encouragement, she constantly doodled, trying to depict everything around her. In Japan, she never had a painting teacher, and in Brazil, it was even more so. Married at a young age, she became a housewife in a closed society with millennia-old customs, where women were submissive and confined to a restricted circle of friendships and social participation. Thus, her artistic nature lay dormant until she was 31, when fate brought her face-to-face with the art teacher and painter Keisuke Sugano, newly arrived from Japan, passing through São Paulo. Assisted by him, Tomie created her first paintings—simple figurative works, then some landscapes with Fauvist leanings, and other experiments already showing Cubist influence. Most of the paintings from this initial phase were lost in one of the frequent floods that destroyed almost everything she owned in certain regions of São Paulo.

The First Spark of a Star

Though her training with painter Keisuke Sugano was basic and brief, it had at least the advantage of pulling Tomie out of isolation. No one denied her merit or blocked her path, allowing her to follow, with relative freedom, the destiny laid before her. Her encounter with the teacher occurred in 1951, marking the year of her first timid and tentative paintings. Two years later, she participated in an exhibition by the Seibi Group (Seibikai in Japanese), an association of Japanese residents in southern São Paulo, legally established since 1935 and highly regarded within the community. Seibikai had a restriction: it accepted only works by Japanese artists or their descendants. Yet it also offered an unusual openness for exhibitions, simultaneously showcasing established painters and emerging artists. The newcomers attracted the audience, while the veterans benefited from this presence of visitors, including journalists and Japanese art critics living in Brazil. Her first appearance was noticed, earning an honorable mention from the jury. Her presence remained notable in subsequent exhibitions, earning her two gold medals.

Orderly Development

The blossoming of Tomie’s art in 1951 began with a figurative phase, understandable given the influence of her first and only teacher, a strict critic of her work, who in some ways shaped her stylistic fluidity. Soon, she pursued her own path, experimenting with Fauvism, Cubism, and later Concretism, ultimately immersing herself in abstraction, where she would remain permanently. Yet she always remained faithful to form, well-defined drawing, and the rational, organized application of color. This concern resulted in a visually pleasing painting, accessible and recognizable even to those skeptical of abstraction. There is, therefore, an easy and complete interaction between observer and artwork, regardless of technical knowledge or familiarity with the style.

Technique Assimilated with Natural Ease

The natural ease with which Tomie approached technique, absorbing it effortlessly and without affectation, made her a singular artist, soon noticed and revered in the Salons she participated in, both within Brazil and abroad. By 1957, six years after she began painting, she held her first solo exhibition at the São Paulo Museum of Modern Art. She was a constant presence in annual exhibitions, both domestically and internationally. In 1986, the São Paulo Museum of Art held a retrospective of her work—a feat repeated in 1996 by the São Paulo Biennial. Among her many attributes, her naturalness and simplicity in approaching art contributed greatly to this: transferring to the canvas what she felt in her soul, without yielding to fleeting trends or market pressures. Her enduring presence among the most successful artists of the second half of the 20th century demonstrates that her fidelity to her own concepts and her honesty with herself brought just rewards. (Text by Paulo Victorino) Tomie Ohtake’s painting develops from abstract languages. From the informal tendency that characterized her work in the late 1950s, she evolved toward gestural abstraction exploring spatiality in the early 1960s, venturing into larger canvases and investigating color and texture with a delicacy that would define her contribution. From the early 1960s emerges a series of highly poetic works, characterized by fluent gestural expression and a sensitive reduction of chromatic range to a maximum of three almost invariably constant tones. This period also gave rise to a phase of overlapping orthogonal planes across the canvas, where materiality and chromatic transparency assert themselves in sober compositions, with visible calligraphy, already hinting at her vocation for manipulating broad spatiality. The presence of geometrism, dominating form versus background yet always executed with a refined pictorial treatment, emerges in the early 1970s, around the same time she develops a preference for square canvases with expansive spatial surfaces. Curves gradually insinuate themselves, dominating the surfaces with delicate transparency. Aracy Amaral

Interview with Tomie Ohtake

Tomie Ohtake discusses art and modernity with Jornal Jovem.

We know that art has, among its goals, the reflection of the social context of its time. How would you describe this in the present day, and what might it be reflecting about the world we live in?
Art critics and historians are the ones who speak to this relationship, since artists create art and their intuition may place their work ahead of or behind the social context. Generally, however, innovative art is ahead of its time.

Can art function as a release valve, helping to maintain emotional balance for both creators and audiences? How?
Art can serve this purpose, but not necessarily. Imbalance is very common and not inherently negative—it can even propel both art and humanity forward.

Are mass culture and the constant media-driven call for consumption reflected in contemporary artistic expressions? How?
Today it is quite common, as artists are also exposed to these phenomena. Yet good art can either bypass them entirely or engage with them intelligently and poetically.

How do you view the cultural moment today? Is art, in general, becoming impoverished, or once again fulfilling its role in reflecting society?
There may be minor deviations, but art is always reflecting society, while simultaneously being reflected by society as it positions itself in relation to it.

What is currently lacking to encourage young people to develop a greater taste for the arts?
When I began painting in the 1950s, abstraction in Brazil was largely incomprehensible, but today it has been absorbed into contemporary art. As for fostering a love of art among the youth, you should ask Stela Barbieri*, who directs the educational programs at the Tomie Ohtake Institute—she knows about these challenging matters.

In general terms, what are the main differences between modern art compared to both classical and contemporary art?
Classical art engages more directly with society. In modern art, the conversation occurs within the art itself, while contemporary art tends to engage in a much more cerebral dialogue.

Quotes by Tomie Ohtake

"My work is Western, yet it bears a strong Japanese influence, reflecting my upbringing. This influence manifests in the pursuit of synthesis: few elements must convey much."

"Everything I have to say is expressed in my work. I never planned my forms rationally; they simply emerged."

"I do not like small things, nor painting with just my fingertips. I use my whole body."

"The critic Mario Pedrosa said: Tomie, would you like to try painting some canvases with your eyes closed? I did, and when I opened them, an image appeared—it was not a fixed form."

"It was the yellow light here—I fell in love as soon as I disembarked at the port of Santos."

"In Japan, everything is Zen. They talk Zen, Zen. I never thought about it. Zen is what you are doing—it is a person’s movement."

Critical Commentary

After a brief period exploring figurative painting, Tomie Ohtake established herself in abstraction. In the early 1960s, she employed a restrained color palette, typically dominated by two or three hues. Her compositions guide the viewer’s eye across surfaces that often evoke nebulous forms. In some works, she uses "sparse" brushstrokes and highly diluted paints, exploring transparency. Later, her canvases introduce colored forms, large rectangles that appear to float in space. Throughout the 1960s, she increasingly used contrasting tones. Her work reveals an affinity with the painter Mark Rothko (1903–1970), in the pulsation achieved through color and the subtle balancing of elements. The artist explores the expressiveness of the pictorial material, whether dense and textured or diluted and transparent.

In printmaking, she began working with serigraphy and lithography from the 1970s onwards. For most critics, this practice revitalized her painting. Her canvases began to feature curved lines and organic shapes. Although abstract, some paintings suggest landscapes—mountains or river curves—enhancing dynamism and the sense of movement. Works from the 1980s onward show a warmer color scale and more intense chromatic contrasts.

She also dedicated herself to sculpture, creating works such as Estrela do Mar (1985), installed at Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas in Rio de Janeiro. She proposed interventions in urban spaces, producing large-scale sculptures, like the "waves" commemorating eighty years of Japanese immigration, installed on Avenida 23 de Maio in São Paulo. In more recent sculptures, she works with slender tubes that trace sinuous paths through space.

In interviews, the artist emphasizes the importance of Eastern, particularly Japanese, art in her painting, noting that "this influence is evident in the pursuit of synthesis: few elements must convey much."1 From Japanese tradition, Ohtake draws inspiration from the concept of time in ukiyo-e (images of the passing world), an art form capturing fleeting beauty. She continually explores the expressive possibilities of painting: transparency, texture, and the vibration of light. She describes her work as silent painting, reflecting the city of her birth. Her oeuvre reveals an intense dialogue between tradition and contemporaneity.

Critiques

"Color arrived slowly. First came timid landscapes, quickly abandoned for a calligraphic abstraction and a dive into a nebula of grays, whites, and blacks. This was a profound, deliberate exploration. Then the forms began to grow. (...) Tomie has already treated the canvas as a field of matter and texture in articulation, worked with subtle shading and color transitions. Today she can use delicate balances of form as easily as she can venture into bold, intense colors, restrained with a firm hand. It is difficult to divide her work into before and after, or into successive phases, because in reality Tomie painted in an ascending spiral. Even in her early works, it was not simple landscape that interested her. When she moved to texture and material, she was not merely following Parisian Informalism. Her highly constructed forms were not merely rational divisions of space. What always mattered was painting itself, as a reflection of a moment rather than simply creating images.

(...) it is hard for anyone familiar with a Tomie Ohtake painting not to recognize her other works. Even if she spent her life articulating very simple elements and delicate color overlays—as many painters did internationally—the dosage of color and formal elements long since established her identity (...).

Tomie thus achieves canvases of physical quality—the material is beautiful, the texture almost tactile, the contours of shapes strong in space—while addressing intangible matters like balance, light and shadow, and movement, suggested through vertiginous curves, shaded surfaces, and the way she organizes compositions. Such ambiguous elements are resolved with apparent simplicity, relentless dedication, and quiet satisfaction in the act of painting."

"The artist replaces copying or reproducing known themes or situations with formal suggestion, thus approaching the Japanese black-and-white painting technique, sumi-e, a mark of the 'ancestral pattern,' creating a sober painting with refined plastic-visual quality, through perfect use of techniques and materials: brushes, spatulas, pigments. She did not stop at calligraphic arrangements but, through subdivisions and fractions of shodo characters, created a rich formal repertoire that accompanies her work to the present. Tomie Ohtake, 'as an authentic painter, does not satisfy herself with the informal Western patterns' popular in the 1950s, nor does she fully embrace reproducing Eastern calligraphy. The artist combines calligraphic aspects with European Informalism, aligning with formal suggestion typical of sumi-e painting to achieve surprising tonal results in monochromatic harmonies."

Testimonies

"I never painted emotionally. I have always painted more coldly. Always layering, layer upon layer. Applying many colors, layer upon layer, until I reached what I wanted. The gesture was calmer, always falling onto the canvas and following a more mental direction."
